Police Complaint Filed by Tamil Nadu Muslim Group

Thalapathy Vijay, one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars and the founder of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), recently hosted an Iftar event in Chennai during the holy month of Ramzan. What was meant to be a gesture of unity and inclusiveness has now become the center of a heated controversy.

Why Was a Complaint Filed?

The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath, a prominent Muslim organization, filed a police complaint against Vijay, alleging that the event was disrespectful to Islamic traditions. According to the complaint, individuals who had "nothing to do with fasting or Iftar," including alleged drunkards and rowdies, were allowed to participate, which they say "insulted Muslims."

The organization’s treasurer, Syed Kous, didn't hold back in his criticism. Speaking to the media, he said:

“Muslims were insulted at the Iftar programme organised by Vijay. We believe the participation of drunkards and rowdies who had nothing to do with fasting or Iftar has insulted Muslims.”

He also claimed that foreign security guards hired for the event mistreated guests, saying they were “treated like cows.” The group has demanded legal action against the actor, stating that the complaint is not for publicity but to ensure such incidents don't repeat.

What Happened at the Iftar?

The Iftar event was held at Royapettah YMCA Grounds on March 7, and was attended by hundreds. Vijay appeared wearing a white shirt, dhoti, and a traditional skull cap. He joined in the Ramzan prayers and shared a meal with the attendees.

Vijay’s intention was to promote brotherhood and humanism, and many on social media praised the actor for standing for secular values.

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

While the event went viral for its visuals and emotional connect, it has also drawn criticism from certain quarters. Supporters lauded Vijay’s secular stance, but others saw the move as politically motivated appeasement, especially with the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections on the horizon.

Shortly after the event, Vijay made a public appearance, waving to enthusiastic fans from his campaign van — a move that blended celebrity charm with political messaging.

Politics and Public Image

This controversy comes at a sensitive time for Vijay. Having officially launched his political party TVK last year, Vijay has confirmed that he will not sign any more films after Jana Nayagan, his upcoming project. All eyes are now on his next steps — both as a politician-in-the-making and as a public figure navigating complex cultural dynamics.
